Graduate Instructor/Teaching Assistant Training

The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, in collaboration with the Graduate School, holds an annual training for Graduate Instructors/Teaching Assistants. This training typically takes place the week before the fall semester begins. Our training this year will take place on Monday, August 13 and Tuesday, August 14 from 8:00 AM – 12:30 PM.

The purpose of this training is to help prepare graduate students for teaching and instructional support assignments to complement the discipline specific training that is provided in individual departments. The topics that will be covered are applicable to those who are teaching a class in any discipline.  Presenters emphasize policies, give practical information, and introduce important campus contacts.

UM Professionals and Professors will share classroom techniques for engaging students as well as tools and resources available to new graduate instructors. There will also be opportunities for networking with other graduate instructors.

Some of the topics that will be covered include:

  • Management and Associated Resources: Important information regarding class management as well as specific resources and policies which affect both instructors and students.
  • Instruction and Associated Resources: Strategies and resources devoted to teaching and learning.
